Chapter 23 – The Woods
“Nobody seems too upset about all this,” Zatchell pointed out. The sun set over Archvall as him, Lamia, and Jordy stood in the marketplace watching the townsfolk continue to prepare for the Crimson Moon celebration.
“Back home nobody would ever let anything get in the way of celebrating the Crimson Moon.” Jordianna said. She shrugged. “I guess warding off the spirits of death and welcoming a good harvest are too important to people. Or maybe they just want an excuse to ignore recent events.”
Lamia sighed. “Maybe it’s a silver lining that this all went down now. Nobody has time for an uproar.”
“What will you do now?” Zatchell asked. “Without Ouroboros…”
“We’ll rebuild,” Lamia said. “There’s still a few of us left. At any rate, I still have my duty and we still have Adryis to track down.”
“Speaking of, where is Verial? I haven’t seen him all day.” Jordy looked around. “He didn’t bail on us again, did he?”
Lamia sighed. “I want to say no, but who can really tell with him? I suppose he could have run off again.”
“Harsh. I figure you’d trust me a bit more than that after yesterday,” said a voice from behind the trio. They all turned around to see Verial walking towards them. He was carrying a great bunch of red wildflowers while humming his usual tune to himself.
“Verial? What are those for?” Lamia asked. She felt her face flush.
“Huh?” Verial raised an eyebrow. “Oh, these? I figured the townsfolk could use them. Red is the theme for the festival, after all.”
“Oh…” Lamia felt a twinge of disappointment.
Jordy playfully elbowed Lamia. “Anything you want to say to Verial?” the cleric said to her friend.
“Um…” Lamia hesitated. She was bad with matters of the heart. “I just wanted to thank you again for what you did.”
Verial smiled. “You’d do it for me.” He walked off towards a group of people setting up decorations in the square.
Jordy elbowed Lamia again, harder this time.
“Ouch!” Lamia voiced. “Stop it!”
“No, you stop it,” Jordy said. “That was not at all what you wanted to say to him and you know it.”
“Look, I don’t want to talk about this,” Lamia said. She sulked off.
Despite the disaster, the Crimson Moon celebration began without incident. Perhaps the citizens wanted to take the evening to forget about the situation. The group could not be sure, but they made no effort to spoil the festivities. Jordianna used some of her magic to bloom more lilies. Zatchell and his crew helped set up the stands. Verial delivered his flowers and quietly removed himself from the crowd.
Lamia was left alone at an outdoor bar. She sat with her thoughts, wondering what to do with herself. There was a lot she knew she should have been thinking about. The Order was all but decimated, a Weapon was still out there, and here she sat all alone thinking only of a single man. It was pathetic, she thought, but her mind refused to focus on what it should.
